How to Choose a Silk Sleep Mask Without Getting Lost in the Details
A good silk sleep mask is more than a piece of pretty fabric. The silk matters. But so do the shape, filling, strap and the way the mask actually sits around your face.
Start with the material. Then look at the details you will actually live with every night.

Start with seven questions.
Shopping for a silk sleep mask can become surprisingly complicated. One product talks about silk grade. Another talks about momme. Another focuses on blackout performance, while another promises beauty benefits.
You don't need to compare every marketing claim.
Instead, look at seven practical things: the fiber, the silk weight, the filling, the shape, the light coverage, the strap and the care.
Those details tell you far more about whether a sleep mask is likely to suit you.
Is it actually silk?
Check the fiber composition instead of relying on words such as “silky” or “satin.”
What does the momme tell you?
Momme describes the weight of the silk fabric, not the total weight of the finished mask.
What's inside?
Look at the filling as well as the outer fabric.
How does it fit around your eyes?
Coverage, contouring and the nose area can matter as much as the material itself.
How much surrounding light does it reduce?
A good sleep mask relies on more than fabric thickness. Shape and fit matter too.
Can you adjust the strap?
Head size, sleeping position and personal comfort are different for everyone.
Can you actually care for it?
Silk is beautiful, but it rewards gentle washing and drying.
Check the fiber first.
“Silky” is not the same as silk.
A sleep mask described as satin may be made from silk, polyester, nylon or another fiber. Satin describes a weave structure, not a fiber by itself.
If you specifically want natural silk, look for clear information such as 100% mulberry silk.
This one detail can immediately eliminate a lot of ambiguity when you're comparing products online.
Then look at momme.
The number tells you something useful — but not everything.
Momme measures the weight of silk fabric. It does not mean the finished sleep mask weighs that many grams, and it is not a direct measurement of physical thickness.
19 momme, 22 momme and 25 momme can all be legitimate choices. A higher number simply means a heavier silk fabric for a given area.
For a sleep mask, we would look for the balance rather than simply choosing the highest number available.
SunnySass uses 22-momme Grade 6A mulberry silk because we wanted a more substantial fabric feel while keeping the mask soft and comfortable for nightly use.

The silk matters. But the finished mask is more than the silk alone.
Find out what's inside.
A silk exterior does not automatically mean a silk-filled mask.
When you're comparing sleep masks, check the filling material too. Some products use foam, polyester fiber, cotton or other padding inside a silk-looking outer shell.
For the Moonlight Collection, SunnySass uses pure silk-fiber filling.
The goal is a softly cushioned, lightweight feel rather than a heavily molded or rigid structure.
A useful shopping question
Don't just ask: “Is the outside silk?” Ask: “What is the whole mask made from?”
Shape can matter as much as fabric.
A beautiful silk mask can still be uncomfortable if the fit is wrong.
The most important questions are simple: Does it sit comfortably? Does it move around? Does it press on your eyelids? Does light enter around the nose or edges?
A contoured design creates more room around the eyes than a completely flat mask. A shaped nose area can also help reduce unwanted light gaps.
SunnySass uses a broad 21 × 9 cm shape with contoured eye space and a shaped nose area.
These features are designed to help the mask sit naturally around the face, but fit will always vary from person to person.
Look at the whole light-blocking design.
Don't let one material specification do all the talking.
A heavier fabric can contribute to opacity, but momme alone does not determine how much light a sleep mask blocks.
The final result is affected by fabric construction, color, layers, shape, nose contour and fit.
That's why we avoid promising that every person will experience identical blackout performance.
Faces are different. Sleeping positions are different. The amount of surrounding light is different.
Don't overlook the strap.
You notice it more after the tenth night than the first.
A fixed strap may fit beautifully on one person and feel too tight or too loose on another.
An adjustable strap lets you find your own balance between a secure fit and gentle pressure.
SunnySass uses an adjustable strap wrapped in silk for a smoother contact surface, with elastic inside for flexibility.
Finally: can you live with the care?
Real silk rewards a little attention.
A sleep mask is used frequently, so the care routine should be realistic enough that you will actually follow it.
For the SunnySass mask, we recommend gentle hand washing in cool water with a silk-friendly detergent.
Avoid bleach, wringing, tumble drying and high heat. Reshape the mask while damp and allow it to air dry naturally away from direct heat and strong sunlight.
Always follow the sewn-in care label supplied with the product.
What we chose for Moonlight.
We don't think one specification makes a great sleep mask. The experience comes from several details working together.
Not sure what matters most?
Start with the part of the sleep experience you care about most.
- Want natural silk? Start with fiber composition and mulberry silk information.
- Want a more substantial feel? Compare momme rather than relying on the word “premium.”
- Wear lash extensions? Look closely at eye-space and contoured construction.
- Sleep on your side? Pay attention to fit, shifting and strap adjustability.
- Need a darker environment? Look at coverage, nose shape and fit — not just fabric weight.
- Travel frequently? Consider weight, adjustability, care and how easy the mask is to pack.
