The 10-Minute Ritual Between Screen Time and Sleep

A simple 10-minute transition from screen time to sleep: phone down, lights lower, one familiar nighttime task, then mask on. No complicated wellness routine required.

THE MOONLIGHT JOURNAL · EVENING RITUALS

The hardest part of going to bed is sometimes not sleep. It’s ending the day.

Ten quiet minutes can be enough to tell the day it is over.

You close one app. Then open another.

One last message becomes one last video. One last video becomes checking tomorrow’s weather, then your calendar, then something you absolutely did not need to know at 11:47 p.m.

We know the feeling. The day can be physically finished while your attention is still running through open tabs. So instead of trying to build the “perfect” nighttime routine, we like something much smaller: a short transition between screen time and sleep.

Ten minutes. No optimization contest. No complicated wellness checklist. Just a few signals that say, we’re done for today.

“A nighttime ritual does not need to fix your life. It only needs to make the next ten minutes feel different from the last ten.”

01 / WHY A TRANSITION HELPS

Bedtime Feels Strange When the Day Ends Abruptly

Most days do not have a clean ending. Work bleeds into messages. Messages bleed into entertainment. Entertainment follows us into bed because the phone is also our alarm clock, book, camera, map, inbox, and tiny window into everybody else’s life.

That is why we like the idea of a transition rather than a strict routine. You are not trying to become a different person at night. You are simply changing the environment enough that your evening begins to feel different from your afternoon.

Lower light. Fewer inputs. Slower movements. One small object that only belongs to nighttime. None of these need to be dramatic on their own.

02 / THE TEN-MINUTE RESET

A Simple Ritual Between Screen Time and Sleep

10:00 → 08:00 MINUTES LEFT

Put the Phone Somewhere Boring

Not dramatically across the house. Just somewhere that is not in your hand. Plug it in. Turn the screen face down. Set the alarm now so you do not need to “check one thing” later.

08:00 → 06:00 MINUTES LEFT

Make the Room Look Like Night

Switch off the brightest overhead light. Close the curtains. Let one warm lamp do less work. The goal is not a perfectly styled bedroom. It is simply to stop asking the room to look like daytime.

06:00 → 03:00 MINUTES LEFT

Do One Familiar Thing Slowly

Wash your face. Apply your usual skincare. Brush your hair. Fold tomorrow’s clothes. It does not need to be “self-care content.” Repetition is enough. Choose one thing you already do and stop rushing through it.

03:00 → 00:00

Put the Mask On. Stop Adding Inputs.

Once the eye mask is on, there is nothing else to look at. No new article. No new notification. No visual task to finish. Let that be the end of the ritual rather than the beginning of another one.

03 / WHY THE MASK COMES LAST

The Last Object You Touch Should Feel Like Night

This is one reason we like sleep masks beyond their practical job of blocking light: they can become a physical ending point.

A phone can always offer one more thing. A silk eye mask offers the opposite. Once it is in place, its usefulness comes from what it removes from the moment: visual clutter, the room around you, and the temptation to keep looking.

We designed the SunnySass mask to feel like something you would actually want to make part of that final minute: smooth 22 momme mulberry silk, a contoured eye area, and an adjustable fit that can be tuned without tying a knot.

The ritual is small. The object can still feel special.

04 / KEEP IT REALISTIC

Your Night Routine Does Not Need Twelve Steps

The internet is very good at turning rest into another project. Perfect lighting. Perfect tea. Perfect supplements. Journaling prompts. Breathing exercises. A diffuser. A special playlist. A perfectly made bed.

Any of those can be lovely if you genuinely enjoy them. The problem begins when a routine creates another list you can fail.

We prefer routines with very little ambition. The best version is probably the one you can still do on a Wednesday night when you are tired, late, and not remotely interested in becoming your best self.

The low-effort version

✓ Phone down

✓ Main light off

✓ One familiar nighttime task

✓ Eye mask on

05 / WHEN THE NIGHT ISN'T PERFECT

Some Nights Are Messy. The Ritual Still Counts.

Travel nights. Hotel rooms. Late flights. A partner still reading. Streetlights outside the window. Even at home, not every night arrives with ideal conditions.

That is where a small repeatable cue becomes useful. The room can change. The schedule can change. But something familiar — the same mask, the same final action — can travel with you.

It is one reason a sleep mask earns its place in our carry-on: it takes almost no space, does not require a power outlet, and makes an unfamiliar room feel a little more like your own nighttime.

06 / WHAT 22 MOMME MEANS HERE

Why We Wanted the Silk to Feel Substantial

“22 momme” sounds more technical than nighttime needs to be. In simple terms, momme is one way silk weight is described. A 22 momme fabric has a more substantial feel than very lightweight silk while still keeping the smooth hand people associate with the material.

For a sleep mask — something handled every night, packed into luggage, adjusted, removed, and worn again — we liked that balance. It feels soft, but not fragile.

We do not think everyone needs to become a silk expert. The number only matters if it translates into something you can actually feel.

07 / THE REAL GOAL

You Are Not Trying to Win at Sleep

We like sleep products, but we do not like turning sleep into another performance metric. Some nights are restful. Some are restless. Sometimes life simply follows you into bed.

A ten-minute ritual cannot guarantee a perfect night, and a silk mask cannot solve every reason someone might struggle to sleep. That is not what we ask it to do.

The goal is smaller: make the transition kinder, quieter, and easier to repeat.

08 / FROM LIGHT TO NIGHT

Honor the Night Does Not Mean Making Night Complicated

“Master the Light. Honor the Night.” is our way of thinking about two very ordinary parts of a day. Sunlight can add a small surprise to what you wear. Night can be treated with a little more intention when it is time to stop.

Honoring the night does not require candles, silence, or a perfect bedroom. It can be as simple as deciding that, for the next ten minutes, you are no longer available to everything.

Phone down. Light lower. Mask on. That is enough.

HONOR THE NIGHT

The day does not always end by itself. Sometimes you have to give it a small ending.
